A Direct Belgium car is a used European car shipped to Nigeria, usually through Antwerp, and sold before its first Nigerian registration. Its history was recorded in Europe, so the VIN is the way to read it. Carlytics checks the 17-character VIN against 900+ million records for dated mileage readings and damage records where available, theft and recalls. Full reports ₦9,900.

What "Direct Belgium" means

A phrase that sells cars in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. It describes a route, not a history.

“Na Direct Belgium” is how a seller in Nigeria tells you a car is good: it came straight from Europe and has not been driven on Nigerian roads yet. Belgium earned the name because the port of Antwerp is one of Europe's main export hubs. German saloons, French hatchbacks and Dutch vans are loaded there onto ships bound for West Africa.

That is why a “Belgium” car is often not Belgian at all. Many were first registered in Germany, the Netherlands or France, sold on as trade-ins and driven to Antwerp for export. The label tells you the port, not the life the car lived. A Corolla exported from Belgium can easily have 200,000 km behind it. That is not a problem in itself; a dashboard that shows far less than the car really covered is.

The car's European years left records: inspections, services, adverts, registrations. They are kept against the VIN, and the VIN goes with the car to Nigeria. That is what this check reads.

What European records can show

Cars from Europe are the ones most likely to have dated readings in their history.

Dated mileage readings

Many European countries record the odometer at roadworthiness tests and when a car is advertised or changes hands. Where we hold such readings for the VIN, the report lists them in date order. Compare the last one with the dashboard you see in Nigeria. Our car mileage check explains how to read the timeline.

Damage records

Damage classifications and write-off markers, where available for the VIN. No record found is not proof that a car is undamaged, so the inspection still matters. See the accidented car check.

Theft and recalls

A check against stolen-vehicle databases from the US, the EU and worldwide, and the recall campaigns recorded for the make, model and year.

Signs a "Direct Belgium" claim is not true

The car itself often tells you where it was built and sold.

  • The VIN starts with 1, 4 or 5. Those VINs belong to cars built in the United States. A European maker can build there too, but a car sold as “straight from Belgium” with a US VIN needs an explanation.
  • The speedometer reads in miles per hour first, or the odometer counts miles.
  • Amber side markers at the corners of the bumpers, a common feature of cars built for the US market.
  • Papers in English from a US state, or no European papers at all.
  • The seller cannot say which country the car was registered in before it was exported.

None of these makes the car bad. They make the story wrong, and a wrong story changes the price. If the car really came from America, read our American used car check instead.

Papers for an imported European car

A car that came in from Europe should arrive with customs papers that match it.

Nigeria Customs values and clears an imported car by its VIN. Confirm the duty status on CVMS (a paid check) or VREG, and check that the VIN, model and year on the customs papers match the car. Fake or mismatched customs papers can lead to the car being seized. Our customs papers check goes through each step, and the tokunbo guide covers every import route. For the makes most often shipped from Europe, see the Mercedes-Benz VIN decoder and the Peugeot VIN check.

Questions to ask the seller of a Direct Belgium car

Good answers come quickly and match the papers. Vague answers are information too.

  • Which country was the car registered in before it was exported, and for how many years?
  • When did it leave Europe, and when did it land in Nigeria?
  • Has it been registered in Nigeria yet, or is it still on its customs papers?
  • Do you have any European papers: a registration certificate, service invoices or an inspection report?
  • Has the instrument cluster ever been replaced?

Then compare the answers with the report. If the seller says the car was registered in Germany for eight years and the report holds German inspection readings for that period, the story fits. If the report holds readings from a different country, or a reading far above the dashboard, ask again before you go further. A car that really is “Direct Belgium” has nothing to lose from the questions; it usually has a paper trail to prove them. Keep a copy of the report: it is also useful when you sell the car on.

What the report shows for a Direct Belgium car

Here is what to expect from a ₦9,900 report on a car with a 17-character VIN.

In the report

  • A factory decode: make, model, model year, engine, fuel, body style and plant.
  • Dated mileage records where available for the VIN, from the countries the car lived in.
  • Accident and damage records where available for the VIN, for example salvage and write-off titles and auction damage classifications.
  • A check against stolen-vehicle databases from the US, the EU and worldwide.
  • Safety recall campaigns recorded for the make, model and year.
  • Market value, known model issues and running-cost context.

Before you check

  • Have the 17-character VIN ready. It is on the windscreen, the door pillar and the customs papers; a plate number alone is not enough.
  • Confirm the customs duty status on Nigeria Customs CVMS or on VREG. The report does not cover customs duty.
  • Book an independent mechanic to inspect the car before you transfer any money.

No record found is not proof that a car is undamaged or that its mileage is correct.

What we check before you pay for a car in Nigeria

One VIN, the records from the countries the car has lived in. These are the checks that matter most for a tokunbo car, a Nigerian-used car or a new Chinese model.

Accident and damage

Accident and damage

The report includes accident and damage records where available for the VIN, such as salvage and write-off titles and auction damage classifications. An accidented car repaired abroad and shipped to Lagos can look clean on the lot; the record from its first life is where the repair shows. No record found is not proof the car was never damaged.

Mileage rollbacks

Mileage rollbacks

We put the dated mileage records we hold for the VIN in order, where available, so you can compare them with the dashboard. The weak point on a tokunbo car is the gap between the last reading abroad and the day it reached Nigeria.

Specs & equipment

Specs & equipment

We decode the factory specification from the VIN: make, model, year, engine, fuel, body and plant. Check it against the advert and the customs papers before you agree a price.

Safety recalls

Safety recalls

We list safety recall campaigns recorded for the make, model and year. A car bought abroad and shipped to Nigeria rarely comes with its recall letters, so ask a dealer of the brand to confirm the work was done.

Flood damage

Flood damage

Check whether the car carries flood or weather damage records where available. Flood cars from US storms have been repaired and shipped to Nigeria before, and a flood car can fail electrically long after the sale.

Stolen car check

Stolen car check

We check the VIN against stolen-vehicle databases from the US, the EU and worldwide. Cars stolen abroad have been shipped to Nigeria and seized from the buyer, so run this check before any transfer.

Photos

Photos

Where available, we include earlier photos of the car, for example from auctions. They can show damage, repairs or a different colour that the seller has not mentioned.

Market value

Market value

We estimate a fair market value from comparable cars, so you can tell whether the asking price is reasonable for the year, mileage and specification.

Why check a VIN before buying a car in Nigeria?

Nigeria spent ₦1.58 trillion importing passenger cars in 2025, and most of them arrived used. A car's history abroad does not follow it to Nigeria on paper; it follows it through the VIN.

Mileage on tokunbo cars

An odometer can be wound back between the last reading abroad and the sale in Nigeria. Dated mileage records, where available, show whether the dashboard fits the car's past.

Accidented and flood cars

Salvage and flood cars are bought cheaply abroad, repaired and sold here as clean tokunbo. Accident and damage records, where available, show what happened before the car was shipped.

Stolen abroad

Vehicles stolen in Canada have been traced to Nigeria and handed back to their owners. A theft check before payment protects you from losing the car and your money.

Year and model on the papers

Customs rules and duty depend on the year of manufacture and the exact model. The decoded year and specification help you test what the papers say.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Direct Belgium car?
A used car shipped to Nigeria from Europe, usually through the port of Antwerp, and sold before it has been registered here. "Na Direct Belgium" is how sellers say the car is good quality. Many of these cars were first registered in Germany, the Netherlands, France or elsewhere in Europe, not in Belgium.
Can I check a car before it leaves Belgium?
Yes. Ask the seller or the exporter for the 17-character VIN and read the report before you pay for shipping and clearing. The VIN does not change on the way to Lagos.
Does the report show Belgian inspection records?
The report shows the European mileage and inspection readings we hold for that VIN in US, EU and worldwide databases, where available. We do not promise a Belgian Car-Pass; if the seller has one, ask for it as well.
Is Direct Belgium better than a car from America?
Neither is better by label. A European car may carry dated mileage readings; a car from the US may carry title records such as salvage or flood. Check the VIN, whichever way the car came.
Is the mileage on a Direct Belgium car in kilometres?
A car built for Europe reads in kilometres. A speedometer in miles per hour on a car sold as Belgian means it was built for another market, and the story needs checking.
How much is the report?
₦9,900 for one full report, a single payment with no subscription. The preview before you pay is free.
