Sample data: a typical tokunbo Corolla that lived in the United States before it was shipped to Nigeria. Your report shows the records that exist for your VIN.

Every value comes from the sample report below. A dash means no record: we never fill a gap with a guess.

How to read the report below

Four things buyers miss on the first read.

  1. A dash is a finding, not an error

It means we hold no record for that field. A missing value is always shown as missing, never rounded up into a confident guess.

  2. “Nothing found” is the answer you paid for

A theft or damage check that comes back empty is a result: we looked in everything we hold, and this VIN is not in it.

  3. Recalls are matched on the model, not the car

Open recalls are found by make, model and year. Check each remedy against the service book: the work may already have been done.

  4. One VIN pattern can cover several engines

Where that happens the report lists the variants and their share. Compare the kW and ccm against the registration document.

The Corolla is one of the most common cars in Nigeria: new and used parts are easy to find in every city.

Driving rules in Nigeria
Local rules

Nigeria has no low-emission zones and no plate-based driving bans. These are the rules a private car must meet.

Lagos
BRT lanes

Private cars may not use the BRT lanes; offenders face fines and impoundment. There is no emission zone or odd-even scheme.

Nationwide
Vehicle licence and roadworthiness

Renew the vehicle licence and the roadworthiness certificate every year (in Lagos, after the Vehicle Inspection Service test) and keep third-party insurance current.

Nationwide
Tinted glass

Tinted windows, factory-fitted or added, need a police tinted-glass permit.

Rules and fees are set by the federal and state authorities. Check the current requirements before you buy or drive.
Factory warranty
Ask the dealer

The factory warranty of a 2012 Corolla has expired, and a US warranty is not honoured in Nigeria.

Theft risk index
Above average

Corollas are among the most targeted cars.

Recommendations

  • Use an immobiliser or tracker and park in a secured compound.

Read the evidence, not just the headings

A useful vehicle report separates recorded facts, periods without evidence and discrepancies that need a follow-up.

What to compareExample from this vehicleYour next step
Vehicle identityThe sample uses VIN 2T1BU4EE0CC861245.Match the complete VIN on the car, report and original documents.
A recorded specificationThe factory records matching this VIN identify a 1,798 cc engine, 98 kW and four cylinders.Compare capacity, power and cylinder count with the vehicle-specific document.
A discrepancyThe US auction record of 22/08/2023 lists flood damage and a salvage certificate; a seller who calls the car accident-free contradicts it.Ask the seller to explain the record. A record matching the full VIN is stronger evidence than a general statement.

These are checks on this sample’s details. They do not verify every other field or establish what history will be available for your vehicle.

Compare the record with its original document

Start with the VIN, date and units. Compare each report entry with the inspection, invoice or other document supplied by the seller. Keep the original wording alongside any translation.

Ask for evidence covering missing periods. If two readings conflict, keep both while you establish what happened; do not silently discard the inconvenient one. A clear explanation should identify the source and the reason for the difference.

A missing record does not establish that a car has never been damaged or that its mileage is correct. Check the dates the records actually cover. Treat a calculated estimate separately from a measured value.

How we know the year and the mileage

A car can have three different years, and we keep them apart:

Model year:
the manufacturer's designation for the model version, taken from a record for your exact VIN where one exists, otherwise decoded from the VIN by that manufacturer's rules.
Production year:
when your individual car was built, from the manufacturer's production records.
First registration year:
when the car was first registered for the road, from official vehicle registers.

We show every year we can establish, even when two match. A record for your exact VIN takes precedence over an estimate from the VIN's structure. If a year cannot be established reliably, we leave it blank or show the model's production period rather than guess.

Mileage

Odometer readings come from official inspection records and market records, plotted by the date each was taken. Only official inspection readings are used to check whether the mileage ever went backwards, and the car's yearly mileage is compared with what is typical. We add new records every day.

How this sample would look for a car in Nigeria

The sample is a tokunbo Corolla that lived in the United States before it was shipped to Nigeria. Your car fills in according to where it lived before.

The specification, recall and known-issues sections work the same way for any car with a 17-character VIN. The decode comes from the VIN itself, so a Chinese-built, European or American car is read against the right reference data.

The mileage, accident and damage sections show the records available for that VIN, from the countries the car lived in. A car from Belgium or Germany often has dated mileage readings; a car from the US may have title records instead. Where nothing was found, the report says so rather than guessing.

The report does not cover Nigerian customs duty, FRSC plate records or police certificates. Those are official checks you run alongside it, and our home page lists them.
