VIN check for used cars - enter your vehicle identification number

A Peugeot VIN check reads the model, engine and plant from the 17-character chassis number; VF3 or VR3 at the start means a Peugeot built in France. A used Peugeot imported from Europe often has dated mileage records there. Carlytics checks the VIN against 900+ million records in US, EU and worldwide databases for mileage and accident records where available, theft and recalls. Full reports ₦9,900.

VF3 means France

The first three characters of a Peugeot VIN say who built it and where.

VF3 is Peugeot's world manufacturer identifier: the V stands for France and F3 for Peugeot. Newer Peugeots also use VR3. Characters 4 to 9 describe the model, body and engine, and the last eight identify the plant and the individual car. The decode reads all of it and returns a model and engine you can compare with the advert.

Peugeot, like most European makers, does not always use the tenth character for the model year. That is why the report shows the model year, the production year and the first registration as separate fields where we have them, instead of guessing one from the other.

Peugeot in Nigeria

Few brands have a longer history here. It shapes which Peugeots you will meet on the used market.

Peugeot Automobile Nigeria was incorporated in December 1972 as a joint venture with Automobiles Peugeot, and its plant in Kaduna began production in March 1975 with the 504. The 505 followed in 1980, and the 406 is listed among the models assembled there. The plant was later revived as DPAN, a joint venture of Dangote Industries and Stellantis, starting with the Peugeot 301.

So a Peugeot in Nigeria may have been assembled locally, sold new here, or imported used from Europe. Each has a different paper trail. A locally assembled car has Nigerian papers from day one; an imported one has customs papers and, often, a history in Europe.

406 and 407

The 406 was assembled in Kaduna as well as in France; the 407 replaced it. Both are now old enough that the year on the papers needs checking against the decode.

508

The larger saloon that followed the 407. An imported one may carry dated inspection records from Europe, where records exist.

3008 and 5008

SUVs, the 5008 with seven seats. Check the engine and the fuel type in the decode: both petrol and diesel versions were sold in Europe.

301 and Partner

The 301 saloon is the model DPAN started with; the Partner is the van and people carrier.

European history: the strongest records for a Peugeot

A Peugeot that lived in Europe usually passed regular inspections and was listed for sale more than once.

French hatchbacks are among the cars loaded for Nigeria at Antwerp, the port behind the “Direct Belgium” label. A Peugeot from France, Belgium, the Netherlands or Germany may carry several dated mileage readings from inspections and listings. Put them in date order: the mileage should only rise. If the dashboard in Nigeria reads less than the last reading in Europe, ask for an invoice for a replaced instrument cluster, or price the car on the higher figure.

See the Direct Belgium car check and the car mileage check for how to read the records, and the customs papers check for the papers an imported car needs.

Peugeot recalls

Recalls apply by model and year.

The report lists recall campaigns recorded for the decoded make, model and year. A Peugeot workshop can confirm from the VIN whether an open campaign was done. For other European makes, see the Mercedes-Benz VIN decoder or the VIN decoder.

What the report shows for a Peugeot

Here is what to expect from a ₦9,900 report on a car with a 17-character VIN.

In the report

  • A factory decode: make, model, model year, engine, fuel, body style and plant.
  • Dated mileage records where available for the VIN, from the countries the car lived in.
  • Accident and damage records where available for the VIN, for example salvage and write-off titles and auction damage classifications.
  • A check against stolen-vehicle databases from the US, the EU and worldwide.
  • Safety recall campaigns recorded for the make, model and year.
  • Market value, known model issues and running-cost context.

Before you check

  • Have the 17-character VIN ready. It is on the windscreen, the door pillar and the customs papers; a plate number alone is not enough.
  • Confirm the customs duty status on Nigeria Customs CVMS or on VREG. The report does not cover customs duty.
  • Book an independent mechanic to inspect the car before you transfer any money.

No record found is not proof that a car is undamaged or that its mileage is correct.

What we check before you pay for a car in Nigeria

One VIN, the records from the countries the car has lived in. These are the checks that matter most for a tokunbo car, a Nigerian-used car or a new Chinese model.

Accident and damage

Accident and damage

The report includes accident and damage records where available for the VIN, such as salvage and write-off titles and auction damage classifications. An accidented car repaired abroad and shipped to Lagos can look clean on the lot; the record from its first life is where the repair shows. No record found is not proof the car was never damaged.

Mileage rollbacks

Mileage rollbacks

We put the dated mileage records we hold for the VIN in order, where available, so you can compare them with the dashboard. The weak point on a tokunbo car is the gap between the last reading abroad and the day it reached Nigeria.

Specs & equipment

Specs & equipment

We decode the factory specification from the VIN: make, model, year, engine, fuel, body and plant. Check it against the advert and the customs papers before you agree a price.

Safety recalls

Safety recalls

We list safety recall campaigns recorded for the make, model and year. A car bought abroad and shipped to Nigeria rarely comes with its recall letters, so ask a dealer of the brand to confirm the work was done.

Flood damage

Flood damage

Check whether the car carries flood or weather damage records where available. Flood cars from US storms have been repaired and shipped to Nigeria before, and a flood car can fail electrically long after the sale.

Stolen car check

Stolen car check

We check the VIN against stolen-vehicle databases from the US, the EU and worldwide. Cars stolen abroad have been shipped to Nigeria and seized from the buyer, so run this check before any transfer.

Photos

Photos

Where available, we include earlier photos of the car, for example from auctions. They can show damage, repairs or a different colour that the seller has not mentioned.

Market value

Market value

We estimate a fair market value from comparable cars, so you can tell whether the asking price is reasonable for the year, mileage and specification.

Why check a VIN before buying a car in Nigeria?

Nigeria spent ₦1.58 trillion importing passenger cars in 2025, and most of them arrived used. A car's history abroad does not follow it to Nigeria on paper; it follows it through the VIN.

Mileage on tokunbo cars

An odometer can be wound back between the last reading abroad and the sale in Nigeria. Dated mileage records, where available, show whether the dashboard fits the car's past.

Accidented and flood cars

Salvage and flood cars are bought cheaply abroad, repaired and sold here as clean tokunbo. Accident and damage records, where available, show what happened before the car was shipped.

Stolen abroad

Vehicles stolen in Canada have been traced to Nigeria and handed back to their owners. A theft check before payment protects you from losing the car and your money.

Year and model on the papers

Customs rules and duty depend on the year of manufacture and the exact model. The decoded year and specification help you test what the papers say.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check a Peugeot chassis number?
Read the 17-character VIN from the windscreen, the door pillar or the papers and enter it above. The decode is free; the full report (₦9,900) adds mileage and accident records where available, theft and recalls.
What does VF3 mean on a Peugeot?
VF3 is Peugeot's world manufacturer code: V for France, F3 for Peugeot. VR3 is used on newer Peugeots. A VIN that starts another way was built elsewhere, so check it against the papers.
Does the Peugeot decode show the model year?
European makers do not always use the tenth character for the model year, so the report shows the model year, production year and first registration as separate fields where we have them.
Was my Peugeot assembled in Nigeria?
Peugeot Automobile Nigeria in Kaduna assembled Peugeots from 1975, and the 406 is listed among the models built there. A car assembled locally has a different history from one imported used, so ask for the papers.
Can I see European history for an imported Peugeot?
Yes, where records exist. A Peugeot that lived in France, Belgium or elsewhere in Europe often has dated mileage readings from inspections and listings, shown in the report where available.
How much is a Peugeot report?
₦9,900 for one full report, one payment, no subscription. The decode before you pay is free.
