900M+ Vehicles in database
₦9,900 Full report

A Toyota VIN check reads the plant, model, engine and model year from the 17-character chassis number: a VIN starting with JT was built in Japan, 4T or 5T in the United States. Carlytics then checks the VIN against 900+ million records in US, EU and worldwide databases for mileage and accident records where available, theft and recalls. Full reports ₦9,900.
What a Toyota VIN tells you
The first characters say where the car was built. That tells you which records to look for.
| VIN starts with | Built in |
|---|---|
| JT (for example JTD, JTE, JTM, JTN) | Built in Japan. |
| 4T or 5T (for example 4T1, 5TD, 5TF) | Built in the United States. Many Camry, Sienna and Highlander tokunbo cars start this way. |
| SB1 | Built in the United Kingdom. |
| NMT | Built in Turkey. |
| VNK | Built in France. |
Characters 4 to 8 describe the model, body and engine. On Toyotas built for North America the ninth character is a check digit, which catches a mistyped VIN, and the tenth is the model year. Characters 11 to 17 give the plant and the serial number of this one car.
Where a car was built is not always where it lived. A Japanese-built Toyota may have spent ten years in the US before it reached Lagos, so its history is in US records, not Japanese ones. The decode tells you where it was built; the report shows the records held for the VIN, where available.
Toyota models most checked in Nigeria
Each model has its own trap. These are the ones to watch.
Camry
The saloon most Nigerians know by nickname. US-built Camrys start with 4T1; the decode confirms the model year behind the nickname.
Corolla
Built in several countries for different markets, so the first characters vary. Our sample report is a Corolla.
Highlander and Sienna
Family cars that usually come from the US. Check the mileage in miles and any title records where available.
RAV4 and Venza
SUVs built in Japan and North America for different years. The decode tells you which.
Hilux
The pick-up, often built outside Japan and the US. Check the year and the engine against the papers.

US-built Toyota tokunbo: what to check
Used vehicles from the United States are the largest share of what Nigeria imports. For a US-built Toyota, three things matter most.
Miles, not kilometres
A US-market Toyota's odometer reads miles. 100,000 miles is about 161,000 km. A seller who quotes the number without the unit may be selling a car with far more use than you think. Compare the dashboard with the dated mileage records in the report, where available; our car mileage check explains how.
Title and damage records
Cars sold at salvage in the US may carry title brands such as salvage, rebuilt or flood. The report shows title and damage records where available for the VIN. See the salvage and flood car check and the American used car check.
The year on the papers
Customs counts a car's age from its year of manufacture, and the price follows the model year. A Camry sold as one year newer than it is costs you twice. The car year check shows how to read it.
Toyota recalls
Toyota runs recall campaigns on many models. The VIN is how you find the ones that apply.
The report lists recall campaigns recorded for the decoded make, model and year, including airbag campaigns where the report shows them for that VIN. A recall is not a reason to walk away, but an open recall is something to have fixed, and a Toyota workshop can confirm from the VIN whether it was done.
Looking at a Lexus? It is Toyota's luxury brand and decodes the same way: see the Lexus VIN check. For any other make, use the VIN decoder.
What the report shows for a Toyota
Here is what to expect from a ₦9,900 report on a car with a 17-character VIN.
In the report
- A factory decode: make, model, model year, engine, fuel, body style and plant.
- Dated mileage records where available for the VIN, from the countries the car lived in.
- Accident and damage records where available for the VIN, for example salvage and write-off titles and auction damage classifications.
- A check against stolen-vehicle databases from the US, the EU and worldwide.
- Safety recall campaigns recorded for the make, model and year.
- Market value, known model issues and running-cost context.
Before you check
- Have the 17-character VIN ready. It is on the windscreen, the door pillar and the customs papers; a plate number alone is not enough.
- Confirm the customs duty status on Nigeria Customs CVMS or on VREG. The report does not cover customs duty.
- Book an independent mechanic to inspect the car before you transfer any money.
No record found is not proof that a car is undamaged or that its mileage is correct.

What we check before you pay for a car in Nigeria
One VIN, the records from the countries the car has lived in. These are the checks that matter most for a tokunbo car, a Nigerian-used car or a new Chinese model.

Accident and damage
The report includes accident and damage records where available for the VIN, such as salvage and write-off titles and auction damage classifications. An accidented car repaired abroad and shipped to Lagos can look clean on the lot; the record from its first life is where the repair shows. No record found is not proof the car was never damaged.

Mileage rollbacks
We put the dated mileage records we hold for the VIN in order, where available, so you can compare them with the dashboard. The weak point on a tokunbo car is the gap between the last reading abroad and the day it reached Nigeria.

Specs & equipment
We decode the factory specification from the VIN: make, model, year, engine, fuel, body and plant. Check it against the advert and the customs papers before you agree a price.

Safety recalls
We list safety recall campaigns recorded for the make, model and year. A car bought abroad and shipped to Nigeria rarely comes with its recall letters, so ask a dealer of the brand to confirm the work was done.

Flood damage
Check whether the car carries flood or weather damage records where available. Flood cars from US storms have been repaired and shipped to Nigeria before, and a flood car can fail electrically long after the sale.

Stolen car check
We check the VIN against stolen-vehicle databases from the US, the EU and worldwide. Cars stolen abroad have been shipped to Nigeria and seized from the buyer, so run this check before any transfer.

Photos
Where available, we include earlier photos of the car, for example from auctions. They can show damage, repairs or a different colour that the seller has not mentioned.

Market value
We estimate a fair market value from comparable cars, so you can tell whether the asking price is reasonable for the year, mileage and specification.

Why check a VIN before buying a car in Nigeria?
Nigeria spent ₦1.58 trillion importing passenger cars in 2025, and most of them arrived used. A car's history abroad does not follow it to Nigeria on paper; it follows it through the VIN.
Mileage on tokunbo cars
An odometer can be wound back between the last reading abroad and the sale in Nigeria. Dated mileage records, where available, show whether the dashboard fits the car's past.
Accidented and flood cars
Salvage and flood cars are bought cheaply abroad, repaired and sold here as clean tokunbo. Accident and damage records, where available, show what happened before the car was shipped.
Stolen abroad
Vehicles stolen in Canada have been traced to Nigeria and handed back to their owners. A theft check before payment protects you from losing the car and your money.
Year and model on the papers
Customs rules and duty depend on the year of manufacture and the exact model. The decoded year and specification help you test what the papers say.
